QP TIPS: Pipeline Worker Health & Safety

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the US pipeline industry responsible for approximately 49,000 jobs as of March, 2021. There is no such thing as being too concerned for the health and safety of workers, and pipeline construction presents an area of concern where risk is a factor. Regulators and employers must work together to create safe working environments. Safety Stand Downs are becoming a popular and practical way for employers to quickly and effectively review and promote safety on the job. The following are basic but important topics for Safety Stand Downs:

*  Begin each job with proper pre-planning and perform a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) at the start of each shift.

*  Always use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

*  Ensure that all workers are properly and fully trained

*  Promote knowledge and strict adherence to all safety procedures

*  Train workers in emergency guidelines and practices

*  Reinforce a Safety Culture – Teach job hazards and prevention at Safety Stand Downs by presenting engaging and relevant safety content, and encourage conversations with workers.

In the end, we are all responsible for creating and maintaining safe working environments. Let QP know if you have any safety concerns and how we could help!
